Mahjong

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile-matching puzzle played with Chinese Mahjong tiles, not the four-player table game that shares its name. Clear a 144-tile board by pairing identical free tiles: a tile is free when nothing covers it and one long side is open. Choose from 18 board layouts and play with the time limit on or off.

Setup

• Board: 144 standard Chinese Mahjong tiles arranged face-up in layers. Pick from 18 layouts before the round starts, including the classic Turtle.
• Tiles: three number suits (Bamboo, Characters, Dots), honors (Dragons, Winds), and bonus tiles (Flowers, Seasons).
• Goal: clear the whole board by removing pairs of identical free tiles.

Controls

• Select and match: click or tap a free tile to highlight it, then click its identical partner to remove both.
• New Game / Restart Game: deal a new arrangement, or reset the current one to try a different opening.
• Undo / Redo: step back and forward through your last moves.
• Shuffle: rearrange the remaining tiles when no legal match is left.
• Hint: highlight one currently available pair.
• Pause: freeze the round and the clock.
• Time Limit ON/OFF: toggled on the layout-select screen before you start.

Rules

1. You can only select and match tiles that are free.
2. A tile is free if it has no tiles on top of it, and either its left or right long side is completely unblocked.
3. Tiles must match exactly, with one exception: any Flower matches any other Flower, and any Season matches any other Season.
4. Matching pairs are removed immediately, exposing the tiles below and beside them.
5. You win when all 144 tiles are gone. The round is lost if tiles remain but no free pair exists.

Tips

• Clear the top layers and the outer edges first, to uncover the tiles they block.
• Skip easy pairs at the bottom that free nothing; prioritize the matches that open up the board.
• Most tile designs appear four times, so clear all four copies when you spot them rather than stranding two in separate corners.
