Crossword

Crossword is a classic word puzzle game where players fill a grid of white squares with letters to form intersecting words. Using Across and Down clues, solvers deduce vocabulary matching specific grid numbers. The objective is to fill the entire grid using keyboard keys like the Spacebar to toggle typing directions. Invented by Arthur Wynne in 1913, this daily puzzle tests logic and verbal skills.

Rules

  • Grid/Board: Symmetrical grid of white (letter cells) and black (word separators) squares.
  • Objective: Fill every white square in the grid with correct letters to form intersecting words.
  • Clues: Categorized into Across (horizontal) and Down (vertical) lists.

Controls

  • Navigate grid: Arrow Keys or mouse click
  • Toggle direction: Spacebar or double-click a square
  • Enter letter: Press any Letter Key (A-Z)
  • Delete letter: Backspace or Delete
  • Next/Previous clue: Tab / Shift + Tab
  • Mobile: Tap cells and use the virtual keyboard

Step by Step

  1. Scan the clue lists and solve the easiest "fill-in-the-blank" clues first to place initial letters.
  2. Select a square or clue, verify the numbering on the grid, and enter your solved word letter-by-letter.
  3. Use the intersection points: let already-placed letters guide you in solving intersecting vertical or horizontal words.
  4. Fill every empty white cell on the grid with correct letters to complete the puzzle.

Tips

  • Look for singular/plural indicators; if a clue is plural, its answer almost always ends in S.
  • Pay attention to verb tenses; the answer will always match the tense and part of speech of the clue.
  • Memorize common "Crosswordese"—vowel-rich, 3-to-4-letter words like ADO, EWE, APSE, and OREO that builders use to connect corners.
